Duets for the ‘Divas’

VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul concert took place Sunday in Gotham

Her father always told her, “Mavis, you don’t need any gimmicks!”

Mavis Staples along with Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J, Jill Scott and others were relatively gimmicks-free during the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul concert on Sunday in Gotham. The Hammerstein Ballroom aud cheered, danced, swayed and sang along — sometimes at the wrong time. When Wanda Jackson, singing with Sharon Jones, missed her cue during the Amy Winehouse tribute, Jones had the band restart the second verse.

On the red carpet beforehand, presenter Dolly Parton said collaborations aren’t on her radar right now, but she would consider dueting with one person. “Maybe Queen Latifah. We just did a movie together. Maybe we’ll do a rap album or something. What do you think?” she asked.

Maybe Parton should be considering another famous rapper.

“Dolly Parton is amazing. You know every time I think about Dolly, I wonder why I don’t think about music or acting. Two things pop into my head,” said 50 Cent.
