Cruz rules ASCAP Awards London

Wins songwriter, song of year nods

Taio Cruz won top honors at the 31st ASCAP Awards London on Wednesday night, taking the performing rights org’s songwriter of the year and song of the year kudos.

Held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, the kudos honored the most performed songs from members of Britain’s Performing Right Society whose repertory is licensed by ASCAP during 2010. Cruz’s “Dynamite” registered as the song of the year winner, with EMI Music Publishing taking honors for publisher of the year, and the Vanguard award — which Cruz had won last year — going to young rapper Plan B.

The show also featured a tribute to legendary lyricist Hal David, in celebration of his 90th birthday. Albert Hammond, Ricky Ross, Madeline Bell and ASCAP prexy Paul Williams were on hand to perform a selection of David’s compositions.
