Bob Geldof to be keynote speaker at SXSW

Songwriter will also perform at Austin music confab

Bob Geldof will be the keynote speaker and showcase performer at the South by Southwest Music Conference & Festival in Austin. The 25th-anni SXSW music confab runs March 16-20 in Austin.

Geldof will appear with his band, performing music from his archly titled new album “How to Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell.”

The Irish singer-songwriter is as well known for his humanitarian work as he is for his rock achievements. Frontman for the ’80s new wave group the Boomtown Rats, he co-wrote and helmed the recording of the all-star 1984 Band Aid charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” which benefited African famine victims.

He organized the massive 1985 charitable event Live Aid and its 2005 successor event Live 8 and has been active in Bono’s One Campaign since 2008.
