Calver has led LoveFilm since 2006 when it merged with Video Island. The core U.K. business of DVD rental by mail was enhanced by a move into streaming in 2009, and by expansion into Germany and Scandinavia. In the past frenetic 12 months, LoveFilm was taken over by Amazon, and has been racing to consolidate its market leadership ahead of the U.K. launch of a rival Netflix service in the spring, while challenging BSkyB’s monopoly. “Nothing has changed in LoveFilm since the acquisition by Amazon, except we are now moving even quicker to give our customers the best possible content on as many devices as possible,” Calver says.
KEY DEALS: Since November 2010, LoveFilm has launched on platforms such as PS3, iPad and Xbox. It signed ground-breaking streaming deals in the pay TV window with Momentum Pictures, Icon Films, Entertainment One and Studiocanal. These agreements have fundamentally changed the economics of U.K. indie distribtution. LoveFilm also struck its first studio streaming deal with Disney. Amazon must have been happy with its partial acquisition: in February the Seattle-based company bought the 58% of LoveFilm that it didn’t already own.
