Strong cast bolsters Crucible revival

Double Olivier winner Samantha Spiro and Francesca Annis will join Tony nominee Daniel Evans (“Sunday in the Park with George”) in Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” at resurgent U.K. regional house the Crucible Theater in Sheffield.

Helmer Jonathan Munby’s new production, running Nov. 29-Jan. 7 with a Dec. 5 press opening, is designed by Christopher Oram and lit by Neil Austin (both Tony winners for “Red”) and choreographed by Tony-nommed Lynne Page (“La Cage aux Folles”).

The caliber of the cast, which also includes David Birrell, Anna-Jane Casey, Rosalie Craig, Steven Cree, Ian Gelder, Lucy Montgomery, Claire Price, Kelly Price, Alistair Robins and Samantha Seager, suggests the production has the potential for a West End transfer. Although John Doyle helmed a Gotham revival in 2008, London has not seen the tuner about marital (dis)harmony since 1996.
