Structural work causes hitch at musical
The Royal Shakespeare Company has cancelled the first five previews of its West End transfer of its hit tuner “Matilda the Musical.”
Structural work and extensive installation required for the show at the Cambridge Theater has taken longer than planned. Previews of the production, helmed by Matthew Warchus, will now begin on Oct. 25, though its opening date of Nov. 24 remains unchanged.
“‘Matilda’ has a cast made up of three teams of young actors and four young actresses in the title role,” said exec producer Andre Ptaszynski. “This means that, unlike other shows, we cannot extend working hours, take shortcuts and reduce the number of dress rehearsals to meet the date of the first preview.”
