Paul Reubens, Lily Rabe and Jeffrey Wright are among the performers in contention for a lead thesping nomination for the 2010-11 Tony Awards, based on the latest rulings of the Tony Awards Administration Committee.
The committee meets periodically throughout the year to determine category eligibility for legiters involved in the season’s productions. Among other questions, the group issues decisions regarding exceptions to the rule of thumb that sees above-the-title actors considered for lead thesp races and those below-the-title slotted to featured categories.
Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman in “The Pee-wee Herman Show”), Rabe (“The Merchant of Venice”) and Wright (“A Free Man of Color”) are among the actors not credited above the title to be added to the lead-performer mix, with their parts deemed large enough to warrant the shift.
Sebastian Arcelus, the title character in “Elf,” and Santino Fontana and David Furr, both of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” also have been named leads.
Tony admin committee will meet twice more this season in the run-up to the Tony nominations announcement in early May. Kudo ceremony is set for June 12.
