‘Nutcracker’ heads to cinemas

NYCB production gets live HD screening

New York City Ballet is the latest performance troupe to branch out into live HD cinemacasts, pacting with NCM Fathom for a live screening of “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” on Dec. 13.

About 530 venues have signed up for the broadcast, to be produced by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, where NYCB performs “Nutcracker” every year. The digital broadcast will be disseminated live in a couple of time zones and on a tape delay farther west.

A number of performing arts orgs have jumped on the cinemacast bandwagon since the Metropolitan Opera — another company on the Lincoln Center campus — has found success with its own screening series. London’s National Theater recently joined the crowd, as have international dance and opera orgs including La Scala and the Bolshoi Ballet. The commercial Broadway staging of tuner “Memphis” also has made an appearance in movie houses.
