Norman on board for new play

U.N. to back stage project

Marsha Norman will write a play for a legit initiative that teams theatrical producers with the United Nations.

Untitled work will focus on the lives of femmes in the U.S. and developing countries, with pros performing alongside guest readers drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Project is a joint effort by Los Angeles-based Theater for Humans, founded by Susan Blyth and Terry Merkle, and the Creative Community Outreach Initiative of the U.N’s department of public information. Aim is for an Off Broadway bow in spring 2013.

Norman recently wrote a stage version of Louise Erdrich book “The Master Butcher’s Singing Club.” She won a 1983 Pulitzer for her play ” ‘Night, Mother” as well as a 1991 Tony for the book for tuner “The Secret Garden.”

Creative team for the show will visit 10 countries in Asia, Africa and South America through October.
