Stephen Sondheim and the Gotham-based Theater Development Fund are among the recipients of the 2011 Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture.
Six kudos will be handed out this year, to arts types including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Maya Lin, musician-educator Jimmy Heath, arts advocate Alice Diamond and public school principal Ronnie Schuster.
Sondheim, whose tuner “Follies” is currently on the Main Stem in a strong-selling revival, will receive the NYC Handel Medallion, the highest award given by the city for contributions to Gotham’s artistic and intellectual life.
TDF, the nonprofit org that operates the discount-ducat TKTS booths in Manhattan, also runs a series of education, access and outreach programs to promote theater and aud development.
The Mayor’s Award aims to underscore the importance of the arts to the city’s quality of living and its economy, recognizing individuals, orgs, corporations and others for their achievements in the field.
The 2011 award ceremony is set for Nov. 1, with kudos to be handed out by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Alec Baldwin.
