Second Stage to launch annual award

Gotham nonprofit Second Stage Theater has established a new cash prize to be awarded annually to a promising composer-lyricist.

The Donna Award, which comes with a $10,000 check, is named after Donna Perret Rosen, the former art gallery director who has been on the board of Second Stage since 2003.

Inaugural kudo will be handed out next year, with the recipient chosen by writer-helmer James Lapine (“Into the Woods,” “Sunday in the Park With George”), director Susan Stroman (“The Producers,” “The Scottsboro Boys”) and Jujamcyn Theaters exec Jack Viertel.

Tuners presented by Second Stage in recent years include “Next to Normal” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

New play initatives at the company also include a commissioning program in partnership with Time Warner.
