Lin-Manuel Miranda will topline the City Center Encores! presentation of “Merrily We Roll Along” in the spring.
Miranda, the Tony-winning creator and star of “In the Heights,” will appear with Celia Keenan-Bolger (“Peter and the Starcatcher”) and Colin Donnell (“Anything Goes”) in Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 tuner about the disintegrating friendship of a songwriting duo, told in reverse chronological order. Betsy Wolfe and Elizabeth Stanley also will appear in the show, to be helmed by frequent Sondheim collaborator James Lapine and choreographed by Dan Knechtges (“Lysistrata Jones”).
“Merrily,” with a book by George Furth based on the 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, was a flop in its original Broadway bow, but has since gone on to become a cult fave among legit fans.
City Center’s Encores! centers presents an annual season of limited-run, concert-staged revivals of Main Stem tuners, with past outings yielding Broadway transfers, including “Chicago” and “Finian’s Rainbow.” The series’ upcoming staging of little-seen “Merrily” already has been extended beyond the traditional one-weekend-only run of most Encores! shows, with a two-week stint set to play Feb. 8-19.
