The upcoming Broadway revival of “Godspell” has nailed down its Jesus, with Hunter Parrish set to play the son of God in the 1971 biblical tuner.
It’ll be a return trip to the Main Stem for Parrish, best known for his role on Showtime skein “Weeds.” In 2008 he did a stint in the lead role of “Spring Awakening.”
Latest version of “Godspell” grew out of an unrelated 2006 Paper Mill Playhouse production that was helmed by Daniel Goldstein, who also helms the Rialto version. Some members of that show’s design team also return for the revival, but cast members won’t necessarily be back. (Dan Kohler appeared as Jesus at the Paper Mill.)
No further casting has been set for the show, which has music (and some new lyrics) by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked”). Ken Davenport produces with a collection of crowd-funders credited under the name People of Godspell.
“Godspell” begins perfs at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Oct. 13 ahead of a Nov. 7 opening.
