Sheehy has previous experience with Sydney stage
SYDNEY — The Melbourne Theater Company has tapped Brett Sheehy as topper and artistic director.
Sheehy, who was previously deputy general manager with the Sydney Theater Company and is an experienced festival curator, will take over from current topper Simon Phillips.
“Brett has proved himself to be one of the great nurturers of the Australian theater, with a long history of development of new works and a canny nose for excellence and potential,” Phillips said
Sheehy said he will start working with international arts orgs and continue his focus on up-and-coming writers and directors during his tenure.
Currently still under contract as a.d. at the Melbourne Festival, Sheehy said he welcomed a return to his roots.
“Theater is my original artistic home and a return to the theater is an opportunity of a lifetime,” he said. “I especially thank Simon for passing the baton on a company in such wonderful artistic and financial health.”
