Marsalis climbs ‘Mountaintop’

Musician writes original music for play

Branford Marsalis has signed on to compose the original music for upcoming Broadway play “The Mountaintop,” which opens in the fall in a production starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett.

Marsalis previously penned the original music for the Denzel Washington-Viola Davis revival of “Fences,” which, like “Mountaintop,” was helmed by Kenny Leon. The show netted Marsalis a 2010 Tony nom for original score.

Katori Hall’s two-character play, centering on Martin Luther King Jr. on the night before he was assassinated, scored the 2010 Olivier Award for best play when the show bowed in London. Rialto staging is produced by Jean Doumanian (“August: Osage County”), Sonia Friedman Prods. (“Jerusalem”) and Ambassador Theater Group.

“Mountaintop” begins previews Sept. 22 and opens Oct. 13 at the Jacobs Theater.
