Trevor Nunn to direct belated production

Joanna Lumley and Robert Lindsay (“Me and My Girl”) will star in the delayed West End premiere of “The Lion in Winter” at the Theater Royal Haymarket.

Directed by Trevor Nunn, James Goldman’s 1966 drama was famously filmed in 1968 with Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn. Lumley (TV’s “Absolutely Famous”) is no stranger to playing royalty, given her recent London and Broadway stints as the Queen in “La Bete.”

Nunn had intended to revive Goldman’s other famous title, the Stephen Sondheim tuner “Follies” starring Lindsay, but the proposed production clashed with Eric Schaeffer’s Kennedy Center production, set to transfer to Broadway in a run that begins previews Aug. 7 ahead of a Sept. 12 opening at the Marquis Theater.

“Lion in Winter” will play a limited engagement Nov. 4 -Jan. 28 with a press night set for Nov. 15.
