Lithgow returns to Broadway

Actor to star in David Auburn's 'Columnist'

John Lithgow will topline the Broadway bow of “The Columnist,” the latest play by “Proof” scribe David Auburn.

Lithgow’s most recent Broadway gig was the 2008 revival of “All My Sons.” Other credits include “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “The Sweet Smell of Success,” for which he scored a Tony.

Thesp will play Joseph Alsop in “Columnist,” a 1960s-set biographical play about the prominent Washington, D.C., journalist whose involvement in the political scene is complicated by personal concerns.

“Proof” helmer Daniel Sullivan, whose staging of “All’s Well That Ends Well” is currently playing in Central Park, directs the world preem production for Manhattan Theater Club, which also produced Pulitzer winner “Proof.”

Play begins previews April 3 ahead of an April 25 opening at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theater. Further casting remains to be announced.
