Ellington-inspired production sets cast

Adriane Lenox, Brandon Victor Dixon and jazz vocalist Carla Cook are among the performers who have signed on for “Cotton Club Parade,” the first stage outing from the partnership between the recently renovated New York City Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Lenox (“Doubt”), Dixon (“The Color Purple”), Cook and Jared Grimes lead the cast of the revue-like show inspired by Duke Ellington’s years at Harlem venue the Cotton Club. Warren Carlyle, helmer of “Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway,” directs the show, which was conceived by Encores! impresario Jack Viertel with text taken from Langston Hughes poems.

Ellington songs and others from the era will be showcased in the production, with music played by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and music direction by that org’s a.d., Wynton Marsalis. “Parade” will play a brief sked similar to City Center’s Encores! series of staged concert readings, running Nov. 18-22.
