'Master Class' revived on Broadway
When was the last time Maria Callas and B.B. King got mentioned in the same breath?
It was probably Thursday night, when the Manhattan Theater Club threw the opening-night party of its Broadway revival of Terrence McNally’s “Master Class” at B.B. King’s on 42nd Street.
The venue may have seemed a contrast to the evening’s high-tone subject matter. But it felt just fine for its star, Tyne Daly, who has a much more down-to-earth rep than Callas the diva.
Or, as director Stephen Wadsworth put it: “Tyne doesn’t play a lot of fancy-ass characters.” – — Gordon Cox
