Jill Furman has been named the 2011 recipient of the Commercial Theater Institute’s annual Robert Whitehead Award.
Furman’s credits include Tony winner “In the Heights” and the revival of “West Side Story.” Both productions recently ended their Broadway runs and are touring the country.
Charlotte St. Martin, exec director of the Broadway League, which backs CTI with the Theatre Development Fund, said in a statement that Furman’s award was a victory for women.
“It is exciting to see talented women producers make their mark on Broadway, and no doubt her accomplishments will inspire many more young women to pursue producing for the commercial theater,” she said.
Furman is the fifth woman to win the Whitehead.
CTI bills itself as the nation’s only formal program which specifically trains commercial theater producers.
Furman, an alum of the program, will receive the Whitehead kudo in a March 15 ceremony.
