Broadway helmer-choreographer Jerry Mitchell is hanging out his own shingle, launching Jerry Mitchell Prods. in partnership with U.K. producing org and theater owner Ambassador Theater Group.
New company will create, develop and produce stage projects for ATG theaters in London, Gotham and around the world. Mitchell will serve as creative producer and also will direct and choreograph some productions.
ATG, the biggest legit company in Blighty, owns 39 theaters in the U.K., including 13 West End venues. Mitchell’s staging of “Legally Blonde” is currently playing at ATG’s Savoy Theater in London as well as in a U.K. road production, and an ATG co-production of the tuner will open in Sydney in 2012.
No specific projects have been announced for Jerry Mitchell Prods., although in recent months, the director-choreographer has been developing stage versions of “Kinky Boots,” “Mad Hot Ballroom” and “The Honeymooners.”
The new outfit is a joint venture between Mitchell and ATG, as opposed to a wholly owned subsidiary of the U.K. company. Another company under the ATG umbrella, prolific trans-Atlantic producer Sonia Friedman Prods. (“The Mountaintop,” “Jerusalem”), operates as an ATG subsid.
ATG itself has produced recent Broadway outings including “Guys and Dolls” and “Elling.” Its West End output has included a Keira Knightley-toplined staging of “The Misanthrope” and the Trevor Nunn-helmed revival of “Porgy and Bess.”
