Developing musical “Amazing Grace” will get a pair of industry readings next month with a cast toplined by Terrence Mann (“The Addams Family”), Matt Bogart (“Jersey Boys”) and Quentin Earl Darrington (“Ragtime”).
Storyline is based on the biography of John Newton, the former slave trader who penned well-known spiritual “Amazing Grace.”
Tuner has music and lyrics by Christopher Smith, who co-writes the book with Arthur Giron, the playwright who is the former head of the Graduate Playwriting Program at Carnegie Mellon.
Gabriel Barre (Manhattan Theater Club’s “The Wild Party”) helms the cast that includes Josh Young, Katie Rose Clarke, Harriet D. Foy and Laiona Michelle.
Carolyn Rossi Copeland (“Freud’s Last Session”) and AG Funding produce the readings. They are skedded for Feb. 10-11 at the New 42nd Street Studios.
