Arnold Wesker play to open June 7
Samantha Spiro (“Hello, Dolly!” and “Twelfth Night” at the Donmar) will star in a revival of Arnold Wesker’s British classic “Chicken Soup With Barley” at the Royal Court beginning June 3, ahead of a June 7 opening.
First performed in 1958, Wesker’s groundbreaking family-and-politics drama is part one of a trilogy completed by “Roots” and “I’m Talking About Jerusalem.” It will be helmed by a.d. Dominic Cooke.
“Bringing Arnold Wesker’s play back to the Royal Court after 50 years is an exciting prospect,” he said. ” ‘Chicken Soup With Barley’ is an epic play that spans 20 years in the life of an East End Jewish family. It vividly captures a loss of political idealism, a feeling that chimes with our own confused times.”
