Black’s ‘8’ hits Broadway

Play premieres in one-night-only reading

Dustin Lance Black’s docu-play about the trial challenging California’s Proposition 8 will bow in a one-night only reading directed on Broadway by helmer-actor Joe Mantello.

After the show’s preem, title will be licensed to universities and community orgs for presentation around the country.

Rialto reading will be presented by the American Foundation for Equal Rights and legit activist org Broadway Impact, with proceeds from the benefit going to AFER, the org that sponsored the legal challenge to Prop. 8.

Black based the script for “8” on the transcripts of the little-seen proceedings of the trial that found Prop. 8 unconstitutional, as well as on interviews with those involved in the case.

“8” will play Sept. 19 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater, on a night when current tenant “The Book of Mormon” is dark. Casting remains to be announced.
