“The Little Prince,” Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s classic children’s tale, will receive the tuner treatment again, this time with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s son Nicholas.
Adapted and directed by Mick Gordon with lyrics by James D. Reid and produced in association with Lamplighter Drama, the show premieres at Belfast’s Lyric Theater on Dec. 1 and runs until Jan. 15.
The property has had a checkered musical history. Helmer-choreographer Stanley Donen’s 1974 movie “The Little Prince” (screenplay/lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe) tanked, and the 1981 Broadway tuner (music by John Barry, lyrics by Don Black) shuttered during previews.
However, Francesca Zambello helmed a 2003 adaptation for Houston Grand Opera (music by Rachel Portman, libretto by Nicholas Wright) that was filmed by the BBC for DVD release.
