Judge Guare selects 'New Light Shine'
The 2011 Yale Drama Series prize has been awarded to Shannon Murdoch, an Australian playwright and legal assistant, for “New Light Shine,” a play about four small-town lives linked by a violent crime.
John Guare (“House of Blue Leaves,” a revival of which is set to open April 4 on Broadway) selected “New Light Shine” because of “the raw, haunting, richly poetic, deeply emotional” effect of the work. Guare’s tenure as judge for the prize follows David Hare’s stint in the role.
The award consists of $10,000, publication by Yale University Press and a staged reading at Yale Repertory Theater on Sept. 12.
The 2009 winner of the kudo, “Lidless,” opened March 15 in the West End at Trafalgar Studios Theater after scoring the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award.
