Old Globe to present a workshop of the WWII-set musical
New tuner “Allegiance” is ramping up for an industry-only workshop presentation in Gotham from San Diego’s Old Globe theater in July.
George Takei, Lea Salonga (“Miss Saigon”) and Telly Leung are expected to star in the reading, according to the Globe. Thesps have all appeared in prior workshops of the new musical by composer-lyricist Jay Kuo and book writers Kuo and Lorenzo Thione.
Stafford Arima (“Altar Boyz”) is attached to direct, with choreography by Christopher Gatelli (“South Pacific”).
Story is set during WWII, when Japanese Americans were taken into internment by the U.S. Plot centers on the Omura family and its relocation from California to Wyoming as part of the program.
Old Globe presents the workshop by special arrangement with Sing Out, Louise! Prods. Thione and Kuo are associate producers on “American Idiot.”
The San Diego regional has seen the pre-Broadway preems of tuners including “The Full Monty,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “A Catered Affair.”
New York workshop of “Allegiance” is set to take place July 27-28.
