$80 million buys a lot of publicity

Tonys Preview: The Ink

Did you see “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”? Did anyone die? How many times did they stop the show for technical difficulties? What’s going on in the second act? Does it really look like they spent $80 million dollars? How low has Broadway sunk? These were questions that consumed legiters — not to mention a flurry of media attention — for months during the ambitious, troubled musical’s protracted preview period. Without a doubt, it was the most-written-about show of the 2010-11 season, even though it never officially opened. Surely a behind-the-scenes tell-all book (or two) is on the way.

Alas, we will have to wait until next season to find out Tony’s verdict. If even then.
