Yonfan to head Busan’s New Currents jury

Joe Odagiri, Jiang Wenli to judge Asian competish

SEOUL — Chinese filmmaker Yonfan will head the jury of Busan Film Festival’s New Currents section, the competition for new Asian filmmakers.

Also on the jury at the South Korean fest are Japanese thesp Joe Odagiri, Chinese actress Jiang Wenli, Locarno fest director Olivier Pere and Korean producer Oh Jung-wan.

Yonfan gained international recognition with pics including “Bishonen” (Beauty), which played in Panorama at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival, and “Prince of Tears,” which screened in competition at the 2009 Venice fest. Odagiri is best known for his roles in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Bright Future” and Yoichi Sai’s “Blood and Bone.” He’s also starred in Korean pics, notably Kim Ki-duk’s “Dream” in 2008, and will appear in Kang Je-gyu’s upcoming war epic, “My Way.”

Jiang came to international attention in Chen Kaige’s “Farewell My Concubine,” which won the Palme d’Or in 1993. She won the actress award at the Rome Film Festival with Gu Changwei’s “And the Spring Comes,” and had her debut as a director with “Lan” in 2009.

Pere led Cannes Directors’ Fortnight from 2004 to 2009, when he joined Locarno.

Oh’s “Come Rain, Come Shine” played in competition at the Berlinale this year. Upcoming projects include actioner “Countdown.”
