New Video picks up rights to Sundance award winner

Gotham-based distributor New Video has picked up North American rights to Sundance prize winner “Hell and Back Again,” Danfung Dennis’ docu about a Marine’s life during and after his stint in Afghanistan.

Film preemed at Sundance earlier this year and came away with the world cinema grand jury kudo as well as a cinematography prize. “Hell” intercuts a Marine’s return home with footage of the same soldier’s experiences on the front line.

Dennis, a former photojournalist, and Martin Herring produce. New Video’s Mark Kashden and Cinetic Media inked the distrib deal with the film’s exec producers, Impact Partners’ Dan Cogan and Thought Engine’s Karol Martesko-Fenster.

New Video’s Docurama Films will release doc in theaters in October ahead of digital, VOD and DVD. In 2012, it will air on PBS’ “Independent Lens” through a partnership between the producers and ITVS.
