Venezuela’s ‘Rumble’ in Oscar bid

Bellame's drama beats out 10 other contenders

Venezuela’s “The Rumble of the Stones” (El rumor de las piedras), from scribe-helmer Alejandro Bellame, trumped 10 other contenders to represent the country in the Oscar foreign-language film race.

Pic was selected by a special committee led by Venezuelan filmmaker Efterpi Charalambidis.

“Rumble” centers on a single mom who has lost her daughter to the devastating 1999 floods and landslides in the town of Vargas but now struggles to save her two sons from a different kind of disaster, the gang violence prevalent in her barrio.

Drama is set to debut in Venezuela on Sept. 30.
