USC fetes ‘Social Network’ scripters

Writer Dennis Lehane also given literary kudo

“The Social Network” took the top prize at USC’s Scripter award.

The kudo honors the scribes of adapted screenplays and the authors of the original works, or as emcee Nancy Sinatra said, the “inspired and inspiring stories on the printed page and the silver screen.”

Accordingly, writer Ben Mezrich and scripter Aaron Sorkin walked away with top honors.

“It’s like getting hit by lightning,” Mezrich said of first hearing Sorkin wanted to adapt his as-yet-unfinished book.

“My inclination is to take Ben’s acceptance speech and insert ‘cut to’ from time to time,” added Sorkin.

Novelist Dennis Lehane (“Gone, Baby, Gone,” “Shutter Island”) was feted with the evening’s literary achievement award. He wasn’t able to make it to the event as he was teaching in Florida, but library dean Catherine Quinlan assured the aud that he’d be mailed a taped copy of the evening.

“Network” beat out other nominees “127 Hours,” “The Ghost Writer,” “True Grit” and “Winter’s Bone.”
