Studio nabs John Phillips' spec script

Universal’s looking for “Dirty Grandpa,” acquiring tyro writer John Phillips’ spec script for Barry Josephson to produce under his new first-look studio deal.

U bought the spec preemptively for six figures late Thursday in the first sale for Phillips, a standup comedian in New York City.

Story centers on a recently widowed man who gets to know his grandson better while the grandson is about to marry the wrong girl. Josephson VP Alexander Young is exec producing.

Earlier this year, Josephson Entertainment joined with Michelle Krumm Prods. to jointly option feature rights to Australian reporter Andrew Fowler’s upcoming biography “The Most Dangerous Man in the World,” about Wiki-Leaks founder Julian Assange.

Josephson’s credits include “Enchanted,” “Hide and Seek,” “Life as We Know It” and Fox series “Bones.”

Phillips is repped by ICM.
