Universal Pictures has acquired a documentary about Julian Assange for Alex Gibney to direct and produce. Project is the third about the WikiLeaks founder announced last week.
Former U chairman Marc Shmuger will produce, taking on his first project since leaving the post in fall 2009.
Assange has unveiled several top-secret files since starting his site in 2006, including the Afghan War Diary that revealed more than 76,000 documents not previously released to the public.
Gibney’s past docus include “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer.”
While the subjects cooperated with Gibney on those pics, it’s undetermined whether Assange will participate in the documentary on him.
Other Assange projects have been set up recently, including a biopic that Josephson Entertainment and Michelle Krumm Prods. will produce.

David Stern of KippSter Entertainment optioned the article, and the project would be exec produced by Joshua Maurer and Alixandre Witlin of City Entertainment.
