U shoots for a new ‘Scarface’

Shmuger, Bregman would produce, but don't call it a remake

Universal Pictures is developing a new version of “Scarface” — though it insists it’s not a remake or a sequel — with Marc Shmuger and Martin Bregman producing.

Pic is in very early development stages, as U is still meeting with writers. This latest film will take elements from the 1932 Howard Hughes pic and 1983 Al Pacino version, wherein a refugee or immigrant rises the ranks of the criminal underworld to eventually become a kingpin.
