Tribeca takes ‘Superhero’

Drama gets VOD, theatrical release in 2012

Tribeca Film has picked up North American rights to “Death of a Superhero,” helmer Ian FitzGibbon’s live action/animation combo about a teen cartoonist battling cancer.

Starring Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Andy Serkis, Jessica Schwarz and Aisling Loftus, pic preemed at Toronto earlier this year. Tribeca Film, the multi-platform distributor loosely affiliated with the annual Gotham fest, plans a 2012 release for “Superhero” on VOD and in theaters.

Screenplay of “Superhero” is adapted by Anthony McCarten, who also wrote the novel on which the film is based. A production of Bavaria Pictures and Grand Pictures, movie is produced by Astrid Kahmke, Philipp Kreuzer and Michael Garland.

North American distribution pact was negotiated by Tribeca Film’s Nick Savva with Bavaria Film’s Stefanie Zeitler.

“Death of a Superhero” joins a Tribeca slate that also includes “Detachment” and recent release “Janie Jones.”
