Pic earns $21 mil on Thursday
Paramount’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” continued its summer streak yesterday, grossing $21.455 million from 4,011 locations.Pic opened to $37.3 million on Wednesday, making it 2011’s biggest bow so far. It has cumed $64.68 million domestically. Par has been heavily pushing the 3D format for “Transformers” including bowing it early on 3D screens Tuesday night, which took in $5.5 million hours before its $8 million midnight haul. The format made up 60% of yesterday’s gross, outperforming other recent 3D releases like “Cars 2″ which has only made 45% of its gross on 3D screens. “Transformers” is off to a stellar start, though short of its predecessor’s $91 million first two days. Instead of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” the studio is using “Iron Man 2″ as a comparable release, which opened to $152 million Memorial Day weekend last year. Additionally, “Transformers” is seeing a pretty even age split with 55% of its aud younger than 25 and 45% older. Both demos gave the film A-range Cinema Score ratings. Today, the frame expands with more modestly budgeted films “Larry Crowne” from Universal and “Monte Carlo” from 20th Century Fox, which should provide counterprogramming for the over-35 and tween crowds, respectively.
