Paramount's 3D pic expected to hammer U.S. box office
Paramount’s 3D “Thor” kick started its domestic bow Thursday night with $3.25 million in midnight grosses from approximately 1,800 locations.
Pic’s late night earnings marks a solid start for the Marvel comicbook tentpole, suggesting a potential weekend take north of $60 million. The film, which launches today at 3,955 total domestic engagements, should have a dominant Friday gross based on fanboy popularity.
Last weekend, Universal’s “Fast Five” tallied a studio-best in midnight grosses of $3.8 million.
Unlike “Fast Five,” however, “Thor” will have 3D, as well as digital Imax locations to boost overall totals, but that depends on whether the film becomes a 3D event among its most hardcore fans.
Regardless, “Thor” should continue to keep the ball rolling with improved filmgoing headed into the summer months.
