Bosnian war drama toplines Penelope Cruz, Emile Hirsch

Spanish production companies Telecinco Cinema and Mod Prods. have taken minority equity stakes in Bosnian war drama “Venuto al mondo” (Into the World), which stars Penelope Cruz, Emile Hirsch and Jane Birkin and is helmed by Italo thesp Sergio Castellitto.

Film adapts the eponymous bestseller by Castellitto’s scribe-actress wife, Margaret Mazzantini, and follows a single mother who returns to Sarajevo with her teenage son to face the past she shared with her late husband.

The co-production also teams Italy’s Medusa Film, Alien Produzioni and Picomedia.

Telecinco Cinema, the film production arm of broadcasting group Mediaset Espana, and Fernando Bovaira’s Mod will contribute cast, tech talent plus co-financing.

Lensing kicked off August in Sarajevo and continued on the Croatian coast. Now filming in Rome, it will subsequently travel to Bosnia. Pic will be ready for theatrical release by next fall.

Wild Bunch handles international sales rights and will release “World” in France. Medusa will distribute in Italy. Castellitto directed Cruz in “Don’t Move.”

Telecinco and Mod partnered in 2009 on Alejandro Amenabar’s historical drama “Agora,” toplining Rachel Weisz.
