‘Tatsumi’ is Singapore’s Oscar contender

Animated docu comes from Eric Khoo

BEIJING — Eric Khoo’s “Tatsumi,” an animated docu portrait of the manga artist, will represent Singapore in the foreign-language film category at the 84th Academy Awards.

Pic is based on the manga book “A Drifting Life” and other works by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, and made a notable impression in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section.

It traces Tatsumi’s career from his early days as a comics artist in post-WW2 Japan and includes his development of the influential gekiga (dramatic pictures) genre of manga comics, which was pivotal in bringing manga to adults.

Khoo began his career as a comic artist. He is known in the city-state for dramas such as “Mee pok man,” “12 Storeys” and “Be With Me.”

“Tatsumi” was produced by Tan Fong Cheng, Phil Mitchell, Freddie Yeo and Khoo.

The 84th Academy Awards will be held Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
