Sundance Selects to release films on VOD

Five acquisitions to become available at same time as premieres

Theatrical and VOD label Sundance Selects has teamed with the Sundance Institute to release five films on demand as they bow at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Pics, all recently acquired by Sundance Selects, are Brendan Fletcher’s “Mad Bastards,” Michael Tully’s “Septien,” Paul Mariano and Kurt Norton’s “These Amazing Shadows,” Joe Swanberg’s “Uncle Kent” and Gregg Araki’s “Kaboom.” (Pickups of “Uncle Kent” and “Kaboom” were previously confirmed.)

All except “Kaboom” will world preem at Sundance. Movies, grouped in a special Sundance Film Festival section on cable carriers’ on-demand channels, will be made available as each pic screens at the fest and will be accessible for about a month.

Partnership between Sundance Selects and the fest is part of the Direct From the Sundance Film Festival program, now in its second year. Initiative is one of a handful under which traditional film fests (including Tribeca) expand their brands by offering a few current selections for a limited time via VOD platforms.

“Bastards” follows a father traveling across Australia to see his 13-year-old son, while “Septien” centers on the return of a man who disappeared from his family farm 18 years earlier. Doc “Amazing Shadows” looks at film preservation and the National Film Registry’s selections for the Library of Congress.

“Mad Bastards” deal, negotiated by IFC’s Arianna Bocco with Entertainment One’s Charlotte Mickie, includes all U.S. rights. The “Septien” pact, hammered out by IFC’s Jeff Deutchman with George Rush, includes all rights in North America, France, Benelux, Eastern and Central Europe, Turkey, Greece and Asia. “Amazing Shadows” deal, negotiated by Elizabeth Nastro with Paradigm’s Ben Weiss, is for all non-U.S. theatrical rights.

Sundance Selects is a sister company to IFC Films, both of which are owned by Rainbow Media Holdings.
