Sundance Selects has scooped North American rights to Andrew Haigh’s SXSW 2011 Emerging Visions aud winner “Weekend.”
Company also nabbed broadcast and digital rights for the pic in several European territories, including France, Benelux and Spain, and plans a theatrical and VOD release domestically.
Writer-director Haigh’s feature bow, which world preemed Friday night, is produced by Tristan Goligher and stars Tom Cullen and Chris New as young gay men caught up in the intense early hours of a relationship.
“We were completely moved by (the pic’s) universal story about the perils and joys of falling in love,” said Sundance Selects president Jonathan Sehring. “It was one of the most exciting films we saw at this year’s festival. We really look forward to bringing this to a big audience.”
Deal was negotiated by Sundance Selects senior VP of acquisitions and productions Arianna Bocco and manager of acquisitions and productions Jeff Deutchman. The Film Collaborative founder Orly Ravid negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers.
