Sundance Selects has grabbed U.S. rights to “Habemus Papam” (We Have a Pope), the dramedy from Nanni Moretti that screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
Pic centers on a newly elected pontiff (Michel Piccoli) who is too terrified to accept the job.
Moretti co-stars as a psychoanalyst who tries to ease him into accepting the post.
Moretti co-wrote the film with Francesco Piccolo and Federica Pontremoli, and produced with Domenico Procacci.
U.S. distribution pact was negotiated by Sundance Selects’ Arianna Bocco with Janine Gold of Fandango Portobello.
Upcoming slate from Sundance Selects, a sister org to IFC Films and IFC Midnight, also includes “Weekend,” “Pina” and “Poliss,” among others. “Habemus Papam” is next set to screen as a special presentation at Toronto Film Fest.
