Barbra Streisand may be heading to the bigscreen in a remake of “Gypsy” for Warner Bros. and Joel Silver.
The star’s in talks to portray Rose Hovick, mother of burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee. Warners previously released the 1962 movie, which starred Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood.
Project’s in the early stages of being set up, with no writer or director yet attached.
The movie’s screenplay was based on the book for the 1959 musical “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” by Arthur Laurents, adapted from “Gypsy: A Memoir” by Gypsy Rose Lee. Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics for songs composed by Jule Styne with Ethel Merman originating the role of Rose as the take-no-prisoners stage mother.
Streisand’s currently appearing in “Little Fockers.” He last lead role was in 1996’s “The Mirror Has Two Faces.”
