Steinbeck documentary in works

Kanter to produce 'Cortez' film

Producer Robert Kanter has acquired the docu rights to John Steinbeck’s nonfiction travelogue “The Log From the Sea of Cortez” for an upcoming screen adaptation.

Kanter aims to re-create the six-week trip chronicled in the book, a journey that saw Steinbeck and a marine biologist travel by boat from Monterey to the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. Duo catalogued some 500 species during their time together.

Docu will follow the course of the original trip and investigate the environmental changes that have occurred since Steinbeck’s 1940 outing. Producer intends to get a star thesp on board as narrator.

Kanter (“Voices of the Children”) will produce under his production banner Sardine Boat Pictures. He intends to shoot the docu next year, with a release timeline still to be detemined.
