Sony Pictures Entertainment has upped Gelena Weissman to VP head of business affairs administration and Rey Cuerdo to VP of business affairs administration,
In their new roles, duo will oversee and manage the administration of all of Columbia Pictures’ movie development and production deals, as well as deals from Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.
Weissman will report to Andrew Gumpert, prexy of worldwide business affairs and operations, while Cuerdo will report to Weissman.
Weissman and Cuerdo’s responsibilities include overseeing underlying rights and talent options and paying above-the-line talent on all projects in development and production. In heading the department, Weissman assists in forecasting all development spending for the studio. Cuerdo will be setting up and heading new business affairs administration operations for Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.
“These two well-deserved promotions underscore the critical role that Gelena and Rey play in the studio’s business affairs,” said Gumpert. “Once a deal has been negotiated, that’s really just the beginning – these executives are on the front lines, doing the hard work of maintaining, tracking, and managing the deals that make up the studio’s most important business relationships. Weissman, who joined Columbia in 2008, began her career at 20th Century Fox Intl. Distribution. After graduating from law school in 2001, she had a stint at Fox Television Studios before going on to serve as manager and then director of legal affairs at New Regency Prods.
Cuerdo began his career working in Columbia’s accounting dept. in 1984 before moving to participations in 1988. In 1994, Cuerdo started as manager in Columbia’s business affairs administration and steadily worked his way up the ranks, being promoted to director in 1999 and then executive director in 2004. He holds a BA in Broadcast Communication from the University of The Philippines and an MBA from Pepperdine University.
