Screen Gems to distribute the pic Stateside
Deals for SXSW pics are trickling in, with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions continuing the wave of sci-fi interest with its acquisition of U.S. rights to helmer-scribe Joe Cornish’s “Attack the Block.” The studio’s genre label Screen Gems is set to distribute theatrically Stateside.
“Attack the Block,” about a gang of London inner-city kids fighting alien creatures, preemed at South by Southwest Film Fest where it won the Midnight Feature Audience Award.
Pic, which toplines Jodie Whittaker and Nick Frost, was produced by Nira Park and James Wilson through the Big Talk Pictures banner.
“Joe has created a piece of work we know the masses will enjoy and we are thrilled to be bringing it to a larger stage through Screen Gems,” SPWA prexy Steve Bersch said in a statement.
Screen Gems topper Clint Culpepper added: “The film is, at once, charming, scary, funny, hip, clever and completely hits its mark.”
Distrib has yet to decide on a release date for the film.
The deal was negotiated by SPWA’s Michael Helfand and Scott Shooman, along with Harold van Lier on behalf StudioCanal, which co-developed and financed the film with Film4 and the U.K. Film Council. StudioCanal will handle worldwide sales.
Pic will go out in Blighty via Optimum on May 11.
