PRAGUE — Slovenia has chosen Janez Burger’s “Silent Sonata” (aka “Circus Fantasticus”), which took top honors at the country’s national film fest, as its submission for the foreign-lingo Oscar.
The dark silent movie concerns a circus offering seemingly mystical solutions to the problems of inhabitants of a remote, windswept town.
Originally scripted in 2003, Burger and producer Jozko Rutar built buzz and coin before shooting in 2009, bringing in Irish and Finnish partners — and an international band of top circus artists — to get the scope they wanted.
“Silent Sonata” took best pic, helmer, makeup, sound, music and supporting thesp for actor Ravil Sultanov at the 2010 Festival of Slovenian Film.
The 84th Academy Awards will be held Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
