Silverdocs, Whole Foods set doc grants

Coin supports environmentally themed features

The Silverdocs docu festival and Whole Foods Markets are teaming to create a $50,000 filmmaker grant program for environmentally themed documentaries.

Two grants of $25,000 each will go to filmmakers at work on doc features in various stages of development, with grant winners to be honored at the Silverdocs awards ceremony June 25.

The new “Green Grants” will go toward concepts or works-in-progress that center on environmental themes, including sustainability and agriculture. Selected filmmakers must have had a short or feature either accepted into a fest or sold for distribution, or be a graduate film student.

AFI and the Discovery Channel’s ninth annual Silverdocs Fest runs June 20-27 in Washington, D.C.

Whole Foods is also getting into the film festival biz, with a portion of ticket sales for its upcoming multicity “Do Something Reel” fest going toward the new docu production and development grants.

Applications will be open April 1-30 via the Silverdocs website.
