Thesp gets General Zod role opposite Henry Cavill's Superman

Michael Shannon has joined Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures’ “Man of Steel” as Superman’s adversary General Zod.

Studios and director Zack Snyder made the announcement Sunday.

Shannon joins Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel along with Amy Adams, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Legendary topper Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips exec producing.

Screenplay’s being penned by David S. Goyer, based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Plot is under wraps. Pic’s due to begin shooting this summer in Pittsburgh with a release planned for December 2012. Shannon was most recently seen in HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics’ “Take Shelter,” from Jeff Nichols.
